It’s not very often that we talk clothing here on Wantist. As gifts go, wearables are incredibly subjective. Taste can be quite personal. The exceptions however, are the truly exceptional, and ALL Knitwear by Annie Larson is exactly that.

Apropos for this first week in October her hats and sweaters will keep you toasty warm and make your eyeballs sing. They’re Cosby Sweaters on overdrive; twenty-first century Huxtables.

As we creep closer to the heart of the holiday season, I’ve been challenging myself to find gifts that give back to worthy causes, but calling it a “challenge” isn’t really the best description. In fact, there are endless ways to give something amazing that also supports a greater good. From proceeds to artist promotion, here are five gifts that improve the lives of more than one!

Light Gives Heat

Light Gives Heat

Light Gives Heat was started by a couple going through the process of adopting a child from Uganda. After the adoption got complicated and the humanitarian crisis in Northern Uganda worsened, the pair quit their jobs and moved to Africa to start a non-profit. In addition to offering weekly consistent incomes to over 100 woman with jewelry, handbags and shirts, LGH is also passionate about telling the stories of Ugandan woman that have inspired them over the years. The Winter 2011 Collection has lots of wonderful things, so support their cause because they dreamt big, risked a lot and changed the lives of many.

A little shop on a mission of kindness

KIND Boutique

Designer and vintage wares from KIND Boutique

When I came across Erin’s new store, everything about it made me smile—the sweetly hand-illustrated graphics by Jackie Bos, the saucy vintage finds, the carefully curated mix of clothing and home accessories, and of course the name.

From KIND’s about page

KIND is an eco-friendly boutique that believes in a lot of things. We believe we can change the world from our homes, that tiny changes can make huge and wonderful differences, and that the things we wear, fill our homes with, write on, use to beautify ourselves or give as gifts are a reflection of ourselves. But, above all we believe in kindness- to ourselves, to our neighbors, to the animals, and to the environment.

Our goal is that you come to our little shop and are inspired to join us in the life changing pleasures of living consciously. And, we have a surprising mix of things to hopefully do that. Whether it be old, new, simple, embellished, humorous, silly, handmade, curiously tailored, or is constructed of odd bits and bobs one thing is for sure, the items we carry are the result of a passion, obsession, great finds, and great ideas.

The shop just opened a month ago and will surely continue to evolve. As all good things must start somewhere, we’d sure love to see the kind ones find success.

What will you find at KIND? Prices vary $8-$300 for gifts, housewares, vintage pieces and eco-designer clothing.

You can get a t-shirt anywhere, but a mystery shirt?

Hipstery T-Shirts

Savor the suspense with a tee from Hipstery

Love for Hipstery is love for novel experiences and we say, bravo! They’re selling t-shirts of their choosing to mystery-starved chaps like us, and we and our brethren are digging it.

Their assumption? That we could all use a little more uncertainty in our lives. That our technological surroundings have afforded us instant answers and very few unknowns—great for fact-checking, but short on surprise.

“We’ve forgotten how to enjoy the unknown, and we’re not better for it,” they say, and this instant-gratification fiend can attest to such truths.

Anticipation is good isn’t it? The waiting, the wondering, the yearning, the burning!—there’s whole damn songs about anticipation. I think they’re on to something.

“Give up control to the hands of fate and once again enjoy the suspense,” they also say, and here’s how they provide such fun while selling you a t-shirt:

Here’s to the breezes

Alternative Apparel’s lightweight long-sleeves for early fall

Sleeves please

While we’re not ready for summer’s end just yet, we feel it coming and do love the colors, smells and styles of autumn. Scarves, hats, boots and layers (layers!) make everyone seem a bit more urbane, or at least a little more snuggly.

Right about now the days are a little breezy, it’s a smidge cooler and we find ourselves turning to Alternative Apparel for a lightweight something to warm us up.

Dress you up or down

Since the company’s founding 13 years ago Alternative has been a brand known for championing the tshirt, tailoring the cut and making it a thing to be worn whatever the occasion. Naturally, founder Greg Alterman wore one to his wedding.

We love that their collection is comfortable (crazy soft, like an old vintage tee) and their style is simple—not hyper trendy, but never a step behind either.

They’re based in Atlanta, with vendors in the US and abroad. They’re especially passionate about ensuring healthy, responsible labor practices while keeping the quality and price right for their customers. Details we can easily appreciate and admire.

An eco alternative

A large and growing part of their business is the Alternative Earth line made from certified organic cotton, and some pieces blended with recycled polyester.

Additionaly, Alternative began a new initiative this spring called Think Earth. Leveraging their influence with fans of their brand (many of them celebrities) they’re shining light on people and organizations taking steps, big or small, to make positive change on the environment. They do this via publishing—videos and interviews that you can find here.

Our picks for autumn’s subtle entrance: for him the Metro Pullover Hoodie ($42), for either of you the Eco-Heather Zip Hoodie ($40), and for her The Stevie L/S Wrap ($40) and the Palm Springs Slub Throw-Over ($48).

Head to Alternative before the leaves start changing. Get 15% off when you signup for their newsletter.

When we say Happy, you say Socks

Colors, patterns and smiles for your feet

Happy Socks

Forget the Prozac and put away the chocolate cake, your disposition is about to be altered by a pair of socks. And if you just can’t shake your apathy—perhaps it’s part of your getup—then a wiggle of your toes will be so ironically jolly.

Happy Socks from Sweden debuted this time last year at Stockholm Fashion Week with their first collection of 100 styles, scholastically titled “Chapter 1”. The launch of Chapter 2 is days away so they’re offering an incredible deal of 10 pairs for half price. Right now.

Red Sock, Blue Sock

Easily the most overlooked and under-appreciated accessory, particularly in a man’s wardrobe, Happy Socks have found a little niche and they’re rocking it.

Made in unisex styles—because what’s the difference between a man or woman’s sock anyway?—the socks are manufactured by a thirty-year-old family-owned company in Turkey. They’re made of combed cotton, for softness and strength, and the seam at the toe is sewn by hand so that it fits smoothly next to your piggies.
