Finally…White Elephant Gifts that Don’t Suck!

white_elephant_print

White Elephant Print by Skylar Hogan

You know the drill, it’s the same in most workplaces. Every year before the holiday break, the office hosts a traditional holiday twosome: a potluck lunch and a white elephant gift exchange.

The rules of a white elephant are simple. Each person brings a present that is already wrapped and places it, anonymously, on a table. The gifts usually have a preset spending limit, typically under $25. Each participant draws a number, indicating when they will take their turn selecting and unwrapping a present from the table. Upon your turn, you can either choose a new, wrapped gift, or trade steal someone else’s gift. Depending on the house rules, each gift can be “stolen” 2-3 times.

Sounds easy enough, right? Well, in theory, sure. But the reality is, most people dread white elephant gift exchanges because let’s face it – the gifts are usually pretty crappy. The whole premise is obligatory gift giving for someone you don’t know (or don’t know if someone you know will get what you purchased. You know?), all within a preset, rather low, dollar amount. But think about it a little more carefully … if you are participating in the gift exchange, do you want to end up with some half-used, awful-smelling, re-gifted bottle of hand lotion? Probably not. So buck up, take it seriously, and give a white elephant gift that doesn’t suck. They actually do exist!

Give & Tell with Geek Dad, Ken Denmead

Ken Denmead is a husband and father from the San Francisco Bay Area, where he works as a civil engineer. He’s also the editor of Wired magazine’s parenting blog, GeekDad, where along with a group of other geeky parents, he posts projects, book and movie reviews, podcasts, and more about being a parent and being a geek.

You’ve seen Ken’s work around Wantist before—he’s also the author of the Geek Dad series of books, Geek Dad, The Geek Dad’s Guide to Weekend Fun, and just released this month, The Geek Dad Book for Aspiring Mad Scientists, filled with science experiments and MacGyvery exploits for the family to do together.

Needless to say, he’s a busy guy, so I’m completely geeking out when I tell you that we snagged some of his time to Give & Tell today. Thanks Ken!

Could you share a wrapping secret with us?

My favorite tried-and-true technique is one I learned as a kid – curling ribbon with the edge of a scissors blade. But I always take it one step further. I will snip the ribbon into smaller strings, and then curl them, for a very interesting curly string effect.

Have you ever given a gift in an interesting way?

Especially with our boys, we love to do treasure hunts. And it’s a tradition in our family to put interesting clues to a gift on its tag. Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes obscure.

Give & Tell with Arjun Basu

Arjun Basu

When Arjun Basu gave Twitter a try three years ago, his first tweet wasn’t the usual mic check. Instead he wrote a story, edited it to 140 characters, and hit send. Intrigued and inspired by the limitations, Arjun’s stories, coined Twisters, now number in the thousands.

In addition to these pithy slices of life, Arjun has also authored Squishy, a book of short stories, and his first novel is currently making the rounds with publishers. Today he shares his own gift-giving stories with you, without any character limits. Thanks Arjun!

What are the best gifts you’ve given or received?

I think, first, gifts are situational. An amazing gift can quickly become useless. The idea of a gift is relative. For my last birthday I received socks among other things. Very funky socks. I have a sock problem (meaning, I love socks too much). I admit this. And my wife fed that problem. I was thrilled. Five years ago, I might have looked at the socks and asked “what are you, my mother?” In that same batch of gifts, I recieved the new Momofuku cookbook. Again, I was thrilled. Wait, I may have mixed up two different gift giving events. Good gifts kind of blur together…. Now, because of what I’ve just said, I have no idea what the best gift I’ve ever given was. I’m trying very very hard not to make a crude joke right here. But it’s very hard. I need to step away for a second.

What’s your favorite reason to celebrate with a gift?

I don’t think gifts need occasions. I mean, yes, a birthday without a gift is literally a day without sunshine but if I see something I like, I buy it. And it becomes a gift. Mainly I hate shopping. I hate the physical act of shopping, whether that means going to a store or even perusing the internet. That said, I love buying stuff on the internet that I come across by accident. Because then, I’m not “shopping.” I’m pretty sure I totally didn’t answer that question.

Steve Jobs, The Biography

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

Certain to be the biography to give this holiday season, Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs was released today.

Not quite three weeks since the news of his death burst across the Internet and rattled our hearts comes an intimate book about Apple’s visionary co-founder, commissioned by Jobs seven years ago.

At the request of Jobs, Isaacson has written a bio intended not to flatter or embellish, but to speak candidly and honestly about the passions, compulsions, and intense personality that drove the creative entrepreneur.

When asked why he authorized the tell-all biography after living such a private life, “I wanted my kids to know me,” Jobs told Isaacson in their final interview at Jobs’ home, “I wasn’t always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did.” (Reuters)

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than 100 family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Jobs gave the author full control over what was written, and promised “not to meddle with anything but the book’s cover.” (NY Times)

If this two-part 60 Minutes interview with Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson is any indication of the compelling read ahead, then I anxiously await a chilly weekend curled up with this book and a cup of hot chocolate.

Visit CBS.com for more about the interview and extras not included in the original broadcast.

What should you give your Boss?

someecards.com - Sorry I wasted so much of the work day picking out a Boss's Day card for you"

Ecards for Bosses by someecards

There are all kinds of bosses—good, bad, hilarious, humorless, geeky, adventurous, gregarious, odd.

We appreciate variety and that not every boss is the same (though you humorless ones could use a little lightening up, mmmk?) It’s why we made Wantist the way we did and you don’t see a drop-down for “Boss-man” (or woman).

To find the perfect gift for your boss, I recommend starting with something for someone professional, unless your boss is a wild one then head straight for the gifts for fun-loving people.

However, to get you started here’s a few favorites for boss-types.

107 Illustrated Recipes: They Draw & Cook Coming Oct. 4 (Pre-Order Now!)

They Draw and Cook: 107 Recipes Illustrated by Artists from Around the World

Two years ago brother and sister, Nate and Salli, were on a family vacation.
“Nate was trying to recreate a favorite dish—fettucine with figs in a balsamic butter sauce—while Salli sat at the counter with her watercolors painting the crate of figs.” They realized how fun it was to illustrate food, and an idea was born.

Nate and Salli wanted to make a book of drawn recipes.

After collecting illustrations from a few artist friends, there weren’t enough recipes for a book so they built a blog. Word got out fast and a year and a half later, They Draw & Cook is the largest collection of illustrated recipes anywhere, from artists all over the world.

As you can see, they were able to make that book after all. They Draw & Cook, the book, comes out two weeks from today, but you can order it now at the special pre-sale price of $12. A wonderful gift for creative cooks of all kinds and just in time for the feasts of fall.

I’ve picked some favorites from the book below. Each illustration links to the original so you can go see it bigger and discover similar recipes.
