Make This Gift: Stitched Map Art!

Maybe it’s the weather (or all those delicious fall smells), but I’ve been feeling mighty nostalgic lately. Anyone else feeling wistful these days? I was reminiscing about past adventures just recently when I spotted this great little DIY art and gift idea from Martha Stewart Living.

Celebrate and remember family vacations or road trips with friends by hand-stitching the route on maps and framing them—brilliant! It’s sentimental without being too cheesy; handmade without looking like a summer camp craft you made in the 4th grade; and inexpensive without looking cheap or last-minute. In other words, it’s the perfect DIY gift!

I already have a few stitch-friendly road trips in mind, including one that would make a great anniversary gift (shh, don’t tell). What about you? Do any specific vacations or trips spring to mind? What was your destination?

Chicago’s Wrigley Field, Canvas Photo Print by Nader Farzan

Baseball—you hit the ball wherever the other team isn’t, then run as fast as you can in a counterclockwise direction until you’re back where you started. That’s it, right? Oh no, there’s so much more—the peanuts, the hot dogs, the home runs, the wave! Serious fans will tell you, it’s the match-ups and the statistics that make the game. The rivalries and the history too.

The biggest match-up of the year begins this week. It’s World Series time! Even if your team wasn’t a playoff contender this year, it’s hard not to get into the excitement of the season’s final series and an American tradition 108 years old.

So Rangers and Cardinals fans, may the best team win! And for baseball fans from coast to coast, here’s 20 amazing gifts sure to knock it out of park.

Groovy Grains: Greeting Cards by Sand Artist Naoshi

Grape Jam Bath by Naoshi for Red Cap Cards

There’s a lot of weirdness in the world. The fact that the Flinstones celebrated Christmas, for instance. Or passion flowers. Those things are bizarre.

Sometimes, though, you’ll find something that’s just weird enough to be really awesome, like cheddar cheese on apple pie or the amazingly cheery work of Naoshi, a Yokohama-based artist who uses only brightly-colored sand as her medium. You can watch the mesmerizing process below:

107 Illustrated Recipes: They Draw & Cook Coming Oct. 4 (Pre-Order Now!)

They Draw and Cook: 107 Recipes Illustrated by Artists from Around the World

Two years ago brother and sister, Nate and Salli, were on a family vacation.
“Nate was trying to recreate a favorite dish—fettucine with figs in a balsamic butter sauce—while Salli sat at the counter with her watercolors painting the crate of figs.” They realized how fun it was to illustrate food, and an idea was born.

Nate and Salli wanted to make a book of drawn recipes.

After collecting illustrations from a few artist friends, there weren’t enough recipes for a book so they built a blog. Word got out fast and a year and a half later, They Draw & Cook is the largest collection of illustrated recipes anywhere, from artists all over the world.

As you can see, they were able to make that book after all. They Draw & Cook, the book, comes out two weeks from today, but you can order it now at the special pre-sale price of $12. A wonderful gift for creative cooks of all kinds and just in time for the feasts of fall.

I’ve picked some favorites from the book below. Each illustration links to the original so you can go see it bigger and discover similar recipes.

Make this Gift: Typographic String Art!

How to Make Typographic String Art : ManMadeDIY

How sweet would it be to make someone a piece of art? It hangs on their wall, when they see it they think of you and when friends come over they get to tell all about how crafty and thoughtful you are.

But what if there’s very little Michelangelo in your blood? Should that stop you? Of course not. In addition to being looking great, this Typographic String Art idea is not at all difficult to do and is quite the impressive gift when you’re finished.

You could make string art house numbers for a house-warming present, string a favorite Princess Bride quote shared between you and your sister, do the baby’s name in string art for hip new parents, or a really big AWESOME for a big girl bedroom makeover.

Learn Something Every Day

Back in the day, Snapple cap facts were my fave. I mean, how else would I know that the Statue of Liberty wears a size 879 sandal? Pretty positive that wisdom will come in handy someday.

Naturally, my eyes lit up when I stumbled upon Learn Something Every Day. It’s a simple illustration project started by Young, a creative agency in the UK, and it’s easy to get lost in these drawings for hours. For instance, did you know eating bananas attracts mosquitoes or that pogonophobia is the fear of beards? Cray cray for sure.

Gifts Gone Golfing

Nice Pants by Landon Nordeman

What’s your relationship with golf? Do you play? Love someone who does? Do they wear rainbow polka dot pants? They should.

I took up the game, quite casually, about a year ago. In other words, I mostly play when we’re visiting my in-laws. I found myself more into it than I’d expected to be. Turns out golf’s a lovely cocktail of serenity and frustration, athleticism and bloody marys.

When it comes to gifts for golfers there’s an unfortunate amount of chintzy gift ideas out there. While it’s tempting to tell you all about the worst ones I’ve seen (perhaps that’s a fun post for another time), I’d rather save you time and help you out with the good stuff. Here’s a few favorite golf gifts for the linksman (or woman) in your life.
