I met Amy shortly after Alt last year. She’s a hoot, a poet, and the wood queen of Little Alouette, an organic wooden toy shop she runs alongside her master carpenter husband, Joe.
Their toys are beautifully handcrafted, wonderfully natural, and the kind you keep in the family for a long time. I gifted a wooden letter H to baby Harper last spring and I’m still waiting for the right little person to come along to give these gorgeous stackers to. Love the grain, don’t you?
If you need a gift for a wee one in time for Christmas or Hannukah, this wooden guitar and mustache rattle are in stock and ready to ship. And they’re awesome. Naturally.
Amy’s a mother of 3 in Columbus, Ohio. She’s also a public speaker, novelist, twitter addict, and blogger. Babble has named her as one of the top 50 Etsy Moms two years in a row. Thanks for joining us Amy!
What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?
When I had my last baby my friends bought me hours of mothers helpers in advance. That was ace. I will always think about that. Mother’s are good gift givers.
What’s the best gift you’ve ever given?
I think when I collected a life scrap book for my gran’s 89th birthday. I took photos and letters from everyone in her life and mementos and compiled them together in a large book. She cried for days and days. She held the book for a long time.
What’s your favorite reason to celebrate with a gift?
I like random surprise gifts. I feel like adults don’t get to be surprised enough. I think we lack wonder and awe more than the littles. I like tiny presents on car hoods and stoop baskets and mixed drinks in cocktail shakers or glass bottles left for friends. I like to give someone a card with kindness in it “just because” they are special to me.
Could you share a wrapping secret with us?
My wrapping secret is paying someone else to do it. :) I am not a very good wrapper. I like the hunt but not the wrapping. I get way too frustrated. I think people who can wrap gifts beautifully are amazing folks.
What’s the best food to give as a gift?
I like month club things. Wine. Beer. Ice cream {jeni’s splendid ice creams}. I like the joy of the person thinking of you once a month and smiling. I also like books. With sweet inscriptions. What can be sweeter? Love notes. Mix tapes. Promises.
I want to start a poem of the month club!
Who’s the hardest person in your life to buy gifts for?
My dad is a grumpy man. He wants nothing. We have made loads of mistakes with him in the past. We buy him a gift card to Sears every year now. Boring but he takes it and buys tools and other assorted tinkering things.
What’s your most extravagant Want?
I want a nice trench coat someday. Like a Burberry one. And I used to have Chanel sunglasses until I lost them. Those. I want those again. And I also want Hunter boots. There. I feel greedy :)
What Amy wants to give:
1.This Farmer’s Egg Crate for my 91 year old gran and her free range eggs.
2. This Bluelounge charging station for my hubby because he is forever looking for his chargers.
3. A Glass Greenhouse for my children Finn, Blaise, and Scout, because it is alive.
And something she wants for herself:
4. I like this for me. It’s a poet’s bag. (There is Thunder in Our Hearts Tote)
